The original 2012 Google Nexus 7 is a mini-tablet that received positive reviews from critics, both for it’s performance as well as an extremely affordable price tag. The tablet was manufactured by ASUS and reviewers were impressed with the overall build quality which rivaled the iPad of the time (which cost twice as much) combined with excellent battery life and pure hardware prowess under the hood. On the down side some reviewers had minor Gripes with the Android OS (4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich) on initial release as well as limited connectivity. Android was however soon updated to version 4.1 ( Jelly Bean), providing a number of enhancements free of charge to users, and the 2013 Nexus is still one of the leading 7 inch tablets on the market.
Pros
- Decent performance
- Affordable
- Excellent battery life
- Solid build
Cons
- Outdated design
- No microSD slot
Bottom Line
The original Nexus 7 is still a strong contender at the bottom end of the tablet market thanks to its robust specs, low price and fast software updates directly from Google.

This is the Android tablet you’ve been waiting for. Beautiful, detailed display. Handsome design and fantastic build quality. Jelly Bean feels like it was built for the Nexus 7. The first 7-inch quad core tablet, it has Porsche-like speed and agility.
