The Best Tablet Laptop Hybrids

Welcome to our current buying guide to the best Tablet-Laptop hybrids out there, based on expert reviews, customer feedback and intensive product research.

A hybrid or a 2-in-1 is so called because of its versatile form, which allows the user to convert it for either tablet or laptop use at will. This conversion can be facilitated by either a detachable design where the screen can be removed from the rest of the device, or by 360-degree hinge rotation where the device remains intact.
As a laptop manufacturer’s answer to the exponentially increasing competition from tablet makers, hybrids have taken the market by storm. From high-end devices to budget and low-range products, the market has it all. With this in mind, we have traveled through the 2-in-1 universe and ultimately procured a list of the best hybrids out there. If you have been yearning for a taste of this hybrid life, this list has all you seek.

The Best Tablet Laptop Hybrids – Top Picks

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

Released as an update to the wildly successful Surface Pro 3, the Microsoft Surface Book 4 comes with impressive, albeit few improvements. The casing is entirely made of magnesium. The body is solid, as is the friction-hinged kickstand which feels stiff and secure when it rotates back. The Surface Pro 4 is slightly larger than its predecessor, but makes up for it with reduced weight and thickness. Many hybrids struggle with keyboards but with a reduction in key-size to trade for a more adequately spaced Chiclet-styled layout, Microsoft have cracked the code with this unit. Typing is comfortable and keys travel deep enough when pressed to minimize typos. Sporting the new PixelSense panel with 2736 x 1824-pixel resolution, the 12.3-inch display is bright and sharp and color accuracy is only a hair away from perfect. With only one USB 3.0 port and a mini-DisplayPort, wired connectivity is limited. The Surface Pro 4 would have really benefited from a USB-C port somewhere on the system. Featuring a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-6500U and an 8GB RAM module, the Pro 4 guarantees excellent performance with any non-graphics-intensive software as well as non-wavering multitasking. For secondary storage, you get a 512GB SSD with a blazing-fast transfer speed of 318.1MBps. With moderate daily usage, the Surface Pro 4’s battery will last about 10 hours which although fair, is less than what competitors like the HP Spectre x360 have to offer

  • 8GB RAM
  • Internal Storage: 256GB

Summary

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is a high-end tablet PC with excellent design and powerful hardware for the business-minded. However, relative to its competitors, its price is a little on the higher side.

Lenovo Yoga 900 80UE008FUS 13.3 inch

Lenovo Yoga 900 80UE008FUS 13.3 inch

The Lenovo Yoga 900 is truly a sight to behold, and backed up with an extensive list of features; it is not all looks. Made of magnesium on the top and bottom, and leather-textured plastic on the keyboard deck, the Yoga 900 looks and feels premium. Other laptops simply cannot compete with the 2.8-pound super light design, and it is thin and compact too. This is especially important for 2-in-1s as you expect to hold them comfortably in one hand in tablet mode. Facilitating the various modes is Lenovo’s sleek 360 watchband hinge design, that comes in different colors to match your tastes. The laptop can operate in different modes; from a traditional laptop mode to a tablet mode. The 13.3-inch 3200 x 1800 touchscreen display is simply amazing; it is super sharp with vibrant colors, and even though it could be a little bit brighter, it provides an overall pleasing viewing experience. Performance-wise, it is very snappy, and trades blows with the rest of them. With a Skylake i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB hard drive, your programs will have a tough time making it sweat. The Intel HD 520 has impressive performance for integrated graphics, but alas, you still won’t be able to play newer games on this. Battery life comes to around 8 hours, shorter than most 2-in-1s, but it still lasts a full day, complementing its portable convertible design.

Microsoft Surface Book CR9-00001 13.5-inch

Microsoft Surface Book CR9-00001 13.5-inch

Facing stiff competition from the likes of the Macbook Pro and Air, Microsoft devices are designed to be nothing less than perfect, and the Surface book is no exception. Its elegant design screams premium, with the performance to match. Microsoft “Dynamic Fulcrum Hinge” is a bit unusual, it keeps the laptop from being completely flat when closed, but it does allow the screen to be completely detached from the keyboard base. The hinge also deepens the keyboard base as it opens to provide firm support for the screen and prevent the laptop from tipping over. Microsoft opted for a Dual-Core Skylake i5, 8GB of low-power RAM and a 128GB SSD for storage; it is a fast performer, and the miserly power requirements of the parts make it last a staggering 12 hours on a single charge. Of course, it helps that the device has two batteries: one in the base and one in the screen, meaning that the battery life is shorter in tablet mode. The Surface Book’s 13.5-inch Pixel Sense display is breathtaking; images are vibrant, text is sharp, and outdoor visibility is excellent. Its odd 3:2 aspect ratio does not provide a great multimedia experience, but it truly shines in document viewing and multitasking. All these bells and whistles come at a cost, however, literally; the price tag is as awe-inspiring as the device is itself.

Cons

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 20FQ000QUS 14-inch

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 20FQ000QUS 14-inch

The X1 Yoga stays true to its 2-in-1 design; it is lightweight with a slim and compact frame, and its hinge design allows the screen to turn 360 degrees. Lenovo went with a rather reserved professional look, and while it is not necessarily ugly, it cannot keep up with other gorgeous designs in the market, including Lenovo’s own Yoga 900. However, it truly shines where it matters. It is light and thin making it pleasing to use in all the various modes the 360 hinge offers. Despite its light weight, the carbon fiber and Magnesium body keep it sturdy, it feels solid in any mode you use it in. Offering up a world class keyboard, responsive touchpad, a fingerprint scanner, and even a TrackPoint, the X1 was made with business in mind. Sporting a Skylake i7, 8GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, the X1 Yoga is a capable workhorse for any task you throw at it. All these components are low power as well, allowing it to run a full workday without you having to look for a power outlet. You get a 14-inch 1440p IPS display that offers vivid and accurate colors, with 109 percent reproduction of the sRGB scale. It is touchscreen as well, which is useful in tent and tablet mode, and the included stylus allows you to write directly into any text field/app through handwriting recognition.

ASUS Transformer Book Chi T300CHI-F1-DB 12.5-Inch

ASUS Transformer Book Chi T300CHI-F1-DB 12.5-Inch

The Notebook 9 Spin is Samsung’s answer to Apple’s Macbook Air; it is a fast performer with the premium design to match. The rigid all-aluminum frame looks amazing, and Samsung has put the device through strenuous reliability tests to ensure maximum strength despite its slender nature. Employing a 360 hinge system, the Spin’s display can, well, spin all the way back to touch the back in tablet mode, and the hinge is stiff allowing comfortable use in all modes. Its slim and compact design makes it supremely comfortable to hold in tablet mode, and means it can tuck away nicely in a small bag. Going inside the device, you find a Skylake i7 processor backed by 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD; it is no slouch. Samsung’s 13.3-inch QHD+ touchscreen display is stunning; images are colorful, rich and sharp, providing you an almost unmatched viewing experience. Plus, the device’s outdoor mode ramps up the brightness to a glaring 700 nits for excellent outdoor viewing. The keyboard keys have nice feedback with deep travel, but the touchpad is simply fantastic; with high accuracy and responsiveness rivaling the highly acclaimed Macbook touchpad, Samsung’s Notebook series touchpads are simply the best you will find on Windows laptops. With a 7-hour rating, the battery life is not excellent, but it will last the full day on most days, or at least until you get to a power outlet.

Pros

  • Elegant design
  • Vibrant and rich display

Cons

  • Poor audio
  • No full size USB port
  • Micro-HDMI

Summary

While stylish and portable the lack of a full-size USB port makes this device lose points in the connectivity department and the audio leaves much to be desired.

Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5259 15.6-inch

Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5259 15.6-inch

Most 2-in-1s are designed to be compact and portable, the Fusion 15, however, was designed to appeal to the traditional laptop user looking to dabble in the convertible lifestyle. The all plastic design does not do the device justice; it is attractive in its own right with its glossy faux brushed aluminum pattern, but it will not be winning any beauty pageants against today’s gorgeous all-metal devices. The 360 hinges operate smoothly and hold the device firmly in all modes; the device is especially useful in tent mode. However, being a full-size 15.6-inch laptop, tablet mode is cumbersome, and its 5.1 pounds in weight make it altogether impossible to use as a traditional tablet. The IPS display offers extreme viewing angles, and while the 1080p resolution will not be competing with today’s QHD+ displays, it offers a great overall picture. Performance-wise, the Fusion 15 pulls its own weight, with fast response times and great multitasking ability. However, it only lasts about 6 hours on a charge; it is a shame they did not fit a bigger battery. It features a full-size island-style keyboard that is not crowded at all, the keys have great feedback and travel, and it is backlit as well. The size of the device allows for a large, responsive touchpad, great Skullcandy speakers, and more (full-size) ports than most 2-in-1s offer.

Cons

While fast, thin and light the Toshiba Satellite Fusion 15 L55W-C5259 only falls short with its small amount of storage, though the SSD performance does make up for it.

Samsung Galaxy Pro S (W700NZKAXAR) 12-inch

Samsung Galaxy Pro S (W700NZKAXAR) 12-inch

Samsung’s Galaxy Pro S’ tablet design puts it up some very stiff competition: Microsoft’s Surface Pro, let’s see how it fares. The Galaxy Pro is a full-time tablet and part-time laptop, and as such, it is extremely slim and super light, beating out the Surface in both counts. However, it does not have an integrated kickstand like the Surface, requiring you to snap it into the (included) keyboard cover if you need to use it at your desk without holding it. It also only allows the screen to be viewed from two angles. The keyboard itself has shallow keys that are not spaced out; typing is nowhere near pleasing. Samsung opted for the Intel Core M3-6Y30 processor on this device, and while it will handle normal day tasks with ease, other devices with i5s and i7s will run rings around it in most tasks. This, however, does mean that the Pro S lasts a staggering 10 hours on a single charge, a good 4 hours longer than the Surface Pro. Being Super AMOLED, the 12-inch 1440p touchscreen display is absolutely flawless; it is bright, crisp, and offers accurate and vivid colors at even the tightest of angles. The Pro S might have a few drawbacks, but it overall does an excellent job at providing a Windows tablet experience, and its included keyboard cover makes it a good deal cheaper than the Surface Pro.

Specs

  • Intel Core M [View Benchmarks]

Cons

  • Keyboard cover can only be adjusted in two angels
  • No SD card slot

Acer Aspire R 15 15.6-Inch

Acer Aspire R 15 15.6-Inch

The 2-in-1 design has quickly become go-to for most laptop users, but with most of them costing a small fortune, the Acer Aspire R 15’s modest price tag comes as a sigh of relief for most. Featuring a brushed aluminum design, the R 15 feels and looks premium. Acer did a commendable job keeping it thin and light, edging out most of the (large screen) competition, but a 15-inch laptop is still too large to use comfortably in tablet mode. Two 360 hinges offer various modes of use: traditional, flat, display, tent, and tablet; and while you cannot handle the large tablet mode size in your hands, it proves very convenient in tight situations like on a bus or an airplane seat. 1080p displays can be found on less expensive systems, but they are usually dull and washed out. This one, however, provides accurate colors and crisp detail with 109% reproduction of the sRGB scale. They could have made it a bit less reflective, though. Another highlight is the backlit keyboard, with a great tactile feel not found on most competitors. The touchpad is also large and responsive. The R 15’s Skylake i5 processor and 8GB RAM are fast and great for multitasking. However, though large, the mechanical hard drive is slow, and the battery drains after about 5 hours of use. Pack your charger.

Specs

  • Intel Core i5 6200U 2.3 GHz [View Benchmarks]

Pros

  • Vibrant display
  • Slim, lightweight design
  • Large screen
  • Great keyboard

Cons

  • Mechanical Hard Drive

The Aspire R 15’s performance, large colorful Full-HD screen, and premium aluminum design offer great value for money that blows other 2-in-1 competitors out of the water.

Huawei MateBook W19 12-Inch

Huawei MateBook W19 12-Inch

The Huawei MateBook’s tablet design makes Surface Pro comparisons inevitable. Just like the Surface Pro 4, it incorporates an Intel Core M series processor and a magnetically attached keyboard that comes separately. The processor, along with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, runs all everyday computing tasks with ease, do not expect to run newer games, however. The device is extremely thin and light, with a full aluminum back and glass front; it looks and feels great. Huawei’s Portfolio keyboard is stylish, converts the tablet into a 2-in-1, and acts as a protective case. It, however, falls short where it counts; its keys are shallow with no spacing in between them, making accidental key presses an occasional occurrence. It cannot compare with the keyboard on the Galaxy Pro S, and especially not Microsoft’s Type Cover keyboard. The 12-inch 1440p IPS touchscreen display offers a rich, colorful viewing experience at even the narrowest of angles. It is also bright enough for use in direct sunlight, but it truly shines indoors. Huawei’s Matebook offers a lot for what you pay. Its slim design, however, reduces ports to a USB-C and headphone jack, and its battery does not last that long; key areas where its competitors have an edge.

Specs

  • Intel Core m5-6Y54 up to 2.70 GHz [View Benchmarks]
  • 8GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • Internal Storage: 512GB
  • Cameras: Front 5MP

  • Good performance
  • Cheaper than competition

Cons

  • Lack of ports
  • Average battery life
  • Keyboard comes at an extra cost

Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 P25W-C2300 12.5-inch

Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 P25W-C2300 12.5-inch

The Toshiba Satellite Radius 12’s name has a long list of superlative adjectives that come before it, but perhaps its most impressive feat is cramming a 4K display into a compact, lightweight frame. Its dark brushed metal design looks sleek, and its light and compact design allows it to be tucked away neatly in a briefcase. Its 360 hinges allow use in various modes, and it is comfortable to hold in tablet mode. 4K resolution on a 12.5-inch screen is nothing to scoff at; with its high pixel density, it offers some of the sharpest images you will see on any screen. Colors are incredibly vibrant and accurate as compared to other devices, and its high contrast brings out all the details in dark movie scenes with unprecedented clarity. It is no slouch either; with an Intel Skylake i7 at its heart, coupled with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, the Radius 12 is speedy, responsive, and will shrug off any task you throw at it. Older games play much better on the new generation of Intel’s integrated graphics, but don’t expect acceptable settings on newer games. The backlit keyboard could offer more key travel, but it gets the job done. The touchpad is large and responsive, but its positioning to the left causes your left palm to brush up on it while typing. The device has a wide array of ports offering a healthy serving of connectivity options.

HP Spectre x360 13T 13.3-inch

HP Spectre x360 13T 13.3-inch

Beauty with brains is probably the best way to describe the HP Spectre x360 13T. This 2-in-1 has a handsome metallic design and elegantly rounded edges that make it scream luxury. Furthermore, you can get one with copper-colored sides and hinges to add to the pomp. At 2.4 pounds, it is heavier than a few of its competitors like the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 which is helped by having a keyboard cover rather than a full base. And speaking of the keyboard, typing is fairly comfortable, although the keys will seem a bit flat if you are used to typing on more traditional keyboards. Thankfully, backlighting is present for low-light typing, and the touchpad is spacious enough. The Spectre x360’s display is nothing less than gorgeous. With a 2560 x 1440-pixel resolution, colors are highly accurate and images are well detailed. Additionally, the audio is loud and clear, making this a top-notch multimedia device. Under the hood, this unit sports the power-efficient and reliable Intel Core i7-6500U, 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, providing more than enough performance for work and entertainment. While we won’t recommend for heavy gaming, the on-board Intel HD Graphics 520 will do well with light to moderate 3D games, as well as moderately demanding graphics software. On Laptop Mag’s battery test, the Spectre x360’s battery lasted an impressive 9 hours which is comfortably on top of the competition.

Cons

The HP Spectre x360 13T is a beautifully-designed premium hybrid that is well-equipped to give you the best everyday Windows 10 experience possible. If you are looking for a 2-in-1, this here is an excellent choice.

Asus Zenbook Flip UX360CA 13.3-inch

Asus Zenbook Flip UX360CA 13.3-inch

At first glance, the ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA will strike you as just another high-end ultrabook with a premium price tag. Yet even with its fair price tag, Asus have added 360-degree functionality for transformation into tablet mode. With a highly polished aluminum casing, the ZenBook Flip is superbly designed. At only 13.9mm thick and weighing a little below 3 pounds, carrying it around is a joy. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of this device is its Full-HD 13.3-inch touchscreen, which boasts accurate colors and is very responsive. That said, typing on the keyboard is not as pleasant as we would hope particularly due to inadequate spacing between keys and lack of backlighting for low-light situations. The selection of USB ports is generous, with 2 USB 3.0 Type-A ports and one USB Type-C (5 Gbps). Audio from the two 1.6 W speakers is will probably not be enough to fill a conference room but is clear enough for casual use. Based on a 6th generation dual-core Intel Core M3-6Y30 CPU, 8GB RAM, integrated Intel HD 515 graphics and turbo mode with SpeedShift multitasking, the Zenbook Flip offers excellent performance for everyday document processing, photo and video editing, web browsing and other productive needs. You can even stretch the device further with some light gaming and it won’t break a sweat. The 512GB SSD is adequate considering most units in its price range come with a 256GB SSD at best. A fan-less design and power-efficient CPU make for an impressive 12 hours before the unit asks for a power outlet.

Dell Inspiron 13 i7359-8404SLV 13.3-inch

The Inspiron i7359-8404SLV is Dell’s latest 13.3-inch convertible in the Inspiron 13 range of products. It is cased in a charcoal-gray and silver chassis which gives it a sleek premium style. The dual hinge enables you to conveniently flip the screen around for both touchscreen tablet mode and traditional laptop use. Measuring 0.75 inches and weighing 3.7 pounds, the Inspiron is neither the slimmest nor lightest in the bunch, but is still portable enough to hold and walk around with for short periods of time. The 1080p IPS screen appears bright and clear. Both images and text output is crisp and colors are accurate. Additionally, sound output is remarkable, making this an all-around excellent multimedia device. Unlike many similar 2-in-1s, wired connectivity is adequate with 2 USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port and a HDMI port around the system’s sides. Inside, the Dell Inspiron i7359-8404SLV is equipped with a 2.5GHz 6th generation Intel Core i7-6500U, 8GB RAM and a fast 256GB SSD to offer remarkable performance and smooth multitasking for everyday use. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 do well with video rendering and light gaming, but as expected struggles with intense 3D titles. At about 8 hours with moderate to heavy use, the battery life is decent.

Asus Chromebook Flip 10.1-inch

Asus Chromebook Flip 10.1-inch

Chromebooks were once regarded by many as the future of affordable and efficient computing but thanks to a string of disappointing products, it is gradually becoming hard to sell them as worthy buys. Nonetheless, the ASUS Chromebook Flip comes with a few features up its sleeve that make it notable. To start with, it is one of the few Chromebooks with 2-in-1 functionality. The machine is all metal, with brushed detailing over the casing to help mask smudges. It also feels well-built and the hinges which turn the screen 360 degrees around feel sturdy. Yet speaking of the screen, although 10.1 inches is a good screen-size for an ultra-portable, the 1280×800-pixel resolution display is not as remarkable as with many similarly-sized standalone tablets. However, colors still look accurate and contrast is fairly sharp although the screen tends to wash out when you tilt it forward. A common trait with Chromebooks is weak performance and the ASUS Chromebook Flip is no exception. Under the hood is a quad-core Rockchip processor, which albeit cheaper, is slower than the Intel Atom or NVIDIA Tegra chips that power most other Chromebooks. The Flip comes with 2GB RAM onboard, but we recommend digging a little deeper into your wallet for the 4GB edition. On the bright side, Chrome OS has become more usable with touchscreens thanks to a string of updates and more services being available in the browser. The Flip might be underpowered compared to the competition, but thanks to this, it boasts an impressive 11-hour battery endurance.

Specs

  • Rockchip 3288-C 1.80 GHz
  • 2GB RAM
  • Internal Storage: 16GB
  • Cameras: Front 1.3MP
  • 10.1 Inch, 1280 x 800 pixels (IPS)
  • 2 lbs

Pros

  • Great build quality
  • Lightweight
  • Long battery life

Cons

  • Cramped keyboard
  • Weak performance
  • Poor display quality

Summary

The ASUS Chromebook Flip is notable for being one of the few hybrid Chromebooks on the market. It is also light and well designed, and while performance and display quality will be a turn-off for some, its affordable price makes it hard to overlook.

HP Pavilion X2 12-B020NR 12.1-inch

HP Pavilion X2 12-B020NR 12.1-inch

With the Pavilion X2 12-B020NR, HP promises world something that is even better than their highly acclaimed earlier model, the HP Pavilion X2 10-k077nr. From a casual glance, the X2 12 might strike you as just a bigger version of its 10-inch predecessor, but underlain are some major changes. For starters, the chassis is now almost entirely wrapped in metal rather than plastic and because of this, the Pavilion X2 12 feels like a more premium device. Additionally, being larger than the original has resulted in a thinner product, measuring only 0.33-inches thick as a tablet and 0.62-inches with the keyboard attached. However, weighing 3.23 pounds, it is pretty heavy even for a 13-inch laptop. Other than being larger than its 10.1-inch sibling, the display on this device is sharper. Thanks to a 1080p Full-HD panel, colors are very accurate and both picture and text appears crisp. Viewing angles are also impressive so don’t be afraid to take your X2 out in the sun. The keyboard is now stretched out and the keys are well-spaced to ensure maximum comfort while typing, and the wide track-pad has been expanded to match the larger screen. Performance-wise, he HP Pavilion X2 12 comes with a 6th generation Intel Core M CPU, 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage space, which is an impressive feature set given the machine’s price tag. While a 9-hour battery life might be regarded as average for a 2-in-1 given today’s high standards, it is still enough to last you a whole day away from the power outlet.

Specs

  • Intel Intel Core M3-6Y30 900 MHz [View Benchmarks]
  • 4GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • Internal Storage: 128GB

Acer Aspire Switch 10 SW5-015 10.1-inch

Acer Aspire Switch 10 SW5-015 10.1-inch

Released as the latest in Acer’s line of convertible hybrids is the Acer Aspire Switch 10 SW5-015, which is yet another impressive device with an even more impressive price tag. The design is nothing short of impeccable. With a careful blend of metal and matte plastic, the 2-in-1 manages a clean, elegant look that is not commonly seen with products in its price range. It is also well-built and solid, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 cover spreads over the screen for added protection. The hinge attaching the tablet body to the base is magnetic, but that doesn’t mean it is loose or weak. Turn the device upside down and give it a good shake, and the screen will hold tight. The tablet portion features a 10.1-inch display with a 1280×800-pixel resolution, which considering the price tag is just what you pay for. The display is bright and pictures will appear sharp enough for most people. USB connectivity is limited to only one USB 2.0 port on the keyboard and one micro-USB port on the tablet. The Acer Aspire Switch 10 SW5-015 is a little on the slow side when it comes to performance. With the 1.33GHz Intel Atom quad-core Z3735F and 2GB RAM onboard, basic laptop and tablet functions will be handled with ease but expect the device to break a sweat with heavy multitasking and intensive applications. Secondary storage is provided for by a 64GB SSD which is fast but not enough for long term storage. As for the battery life, the Switch 10 offers about 8 hours of endurance with moderate to heavy usage.

Specs

  • Intel Atom Z3735F 1.33GHz [View Benchmarks]
  • 2GB DDR3L SDRAM RAM
  • Internal Storage: 64GB
  • Removable Storage: microSD cards

  • Decent build quality
  • Great design
  • Compact
  • Decent display

Cons

  • Low RAM capacity
  • Low SSD storage space
  • Limited USB connectivity

Summary

Its shortcomings aside, the Acer Aspire Switch 10 SW5-015 is a lovely budget-friendly device for both your everyday tablet and laptop needs.

Acer Aspire R11 Chromebook 11.6-inch

Acer Aspire R11 Chromebook 11.6-inch

With little budget to work with, Chromebook manufacturers do everything to help drive down costs, which often involves either compromising on outer design, performance or both. Regardless, when it comes to design, Acer’s R11 Chromebook happily disobeys this trend with an attractive and solid laptop. The chassis is refined, with sharp edges and a textured lid pattern which gives the device a premium feel. Overall, the R11 is one of the most attractive Chromebooks you can buy, and weighing just 2.6 pounds, it is also one of the most portable for use either as a tablet or a traditional laptop. The 11.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels which is acceptable for its price. Text and images appear clear enough and although it is not capable of serving up the most vibrant and deepest colors, it holds its own pretty well. Audio quality from the two speakers is good too. A bit of clarity is lost with full volume, but the overall output is reasonably clear. The number of ports is not as impressive, with just one USB2 and one USB3 available. Furthermore, there is no Ethernet port, although 802.11ac Wi-Fi is present. Running things in the Acer Aspire R11 Chromebook is the low-power 1.6GHz Intel Celeron N3050, which provides decent performance for daily tasks. That said, 2GB RAM is certainly not enough and you would be better off getting the configuration with 4GB RAM for better performance. As is always the case with Chromebooks, you will have to rely heavily on cloud-based storage as the 16GB SSD storage available onboard will hardly be enough. Thankfully, at least one thing is enough, and that is the R11’s 9-hour battery life.

Specs

  • Intel Celeron N3150 1.6GHz [View Benchmarks]
  • 4GB RAM
  • Internal Storage: 16GB
  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixels
  • 2.76 lbs

Pros

  • Attractive and solid design
  • Lightweight
  • Responsive touchscreen
  • Comfortable keyboard
  • Decent battery life

Cons

  • Modest performance
  • Limited ports
  • Limited onboard SSD storage

Summary

Although not as powerful as we may want it to be, the Acer Aspire R11 is a very good 2-in-1 for the money.

Dell XPS 12 9250 12.5-inch

Dell XPS 12 9250 12.5-inch

First impressions of the Dell XPS 12 9250 are excellent and you clearly see just how well-put together it is. The unit is made from highly refined aluminum-magnesium alloy resulting in a hybrid that is incredibly light, yet solid and durable. With sharp and square edges, the tablet ergonomics don’t quite favor tablet mode. Furthermore, at 12mm thick and weighing 1.6 pounds, holding the tablet for casual one-handed use is not the way to go. Thankfully, using the device as a traditional laptop is an enjoyable experience, especially due to the clever magnetic docking system that lets the screen open and fold flat just like a laptop. And speaking of the screen, magnificent is the right word to describe it. The 12.5-inch display has a 3,840 x 2,160-pixel resolution, which results in acute contrast and colors that positively leap from the screen, and despite the fairly reflective screen, viewing angles are excellent even in the bright outdoors. Connectivity is limited to 2 USB Type-C ports (compatible with Thunderbolt 3) and a MicroSD slot which are all on the tablet, and the dock is nothing more than just a very well-laid out backlit keyboard and trackpad. While the Dell XPS 12 9250 excels on design and display quality, one of its biggest compromises is with performance. While the Intel Core M processor in this unit is the top-end M7-6Y75, it still pales in comparison to the Core “i” processors. Luckily, the 8GB RAM and fast 256GB SSD help keep light to moderate use seamless. What can’t be helped is the battery life, which at 5 hours is nothing but mediocre.

Specs

  • Intel Intel Core M 6Y54 1.1 GHz [View Benchmarks]
  • 8GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • Internal Storage: 256GB
  • Removable Storage: Yes
  • Cameras: Front 5MP, Rear 8MP
  • Windows 10
  • 1.75 lbs

Pros

  • Premium design
  • Thin and light
  • Excellent 4K screen
  • Well-laid out backlit keyboard
  • Clever docking system

Cons

  • Ergonomics don’t favor tablet mode
  • Modest performance
  • Mediocre battery life

Summary

The Dell XPS 12 9250 sure has some demeaning limitations, but its design, display and keyboard are among the best of the best. If you are looking for a high-end 2-in-1, It will be hard to pass this one up
