Five Things You Should Do First When You Buy a New Android Tablet

It’s always fun getting a new tablet. Who doesn’t love new technology? Hell, it’s one of my favorite things to do. Still, it can’t all be fun and games when you purchase new technology, even when you buy a new tablet. There are several things you need to do in order to make sure that the new tablet runs well and to make sure it is protected. Of course, you also want to make sure it is ready to do what you need it to do so it is fun to use.

Today, we take a look at five different things you must do when you buy a new tablet. All new tablet owners should give this a read and make sure you check off each and every one before you start using your new tablet. Trust me when I say if you take the time to follow this list, you will be glad you did. When finished, your tablet will be safe and secure, it will fun great, and do exactly what you need it to do whether that is work or play.

Slap a Case on That Bad Boy

Look, this should be the very first thing you do no matter what kind of tablet you buy. I don’t care how careful you think you are or how much you love the design of the tablet, it needs a case. You see, life just happens, especially if you carry it with you wherever you go. Chances are at some point you will drop it or maybe even spill something on it. A case will go a long way toward protecting it from life’s daily wear and tear. It’s also a great time to add a little personality to your tablet, as there are many different types of cases out there perfect for a wide range of uses. Just make sure you get one that will adequately protect your tablet based on your usage.

Pick Up Accessories

Ah accessories. We all need them. Chances are all your tablet will come with will be a basic charger. Is that enough for you? You may need an extra charger for the office or even a stylus or maybe even a mouse if your tablet will work with one. If you plan on doing some real work on it, you may even want to pick up Bluetooth keyboard. There are hundreds of different types of accessories you can get for your new tablet. While you are buying, you may as well go ahead and get everything you need so you can use your brand new tablet the way you want. If you don’t, I guarantee you will be making another trip to the store in just a few days to get it.

Secure Your Tablet

After you have purchased everything and unboxed it, the very first thing you should do is secure your tablet. Let’s face it, while you may not think you will lose your tablet or it will get stolen, there is a chance that it could. That means you need to be prepared.

Most tablets today have multiple options when it comes to security. Some come with fingerprint readers while others include word and number passwords or even picture and patter passwords. No matter what, use at least one of these to secure your tablet. The fingerprint readers, picture and pattern passwords are the most secure, but even a simple number password will help.

Setup your security how you see fit that way you don’t have to worry about what happens to your valuable and personal data if you do happen to lose your tablet or if it gets stolen. Trust me when I say that you will be glad that you did if the unthinkable does happen.

Optimize Your Battery

Your tablet will literally live and die by its battery. Your screen will be the single biggest drain on your battery, but other things such as apps and background updates can do quite a number on it as well. If you are running a tablet under $100 or cheaper expect to have mediocre battery life at best. Go through and adjust your screen brightness a bit in order to save battery life and check out your background app syncing and updates. If you don’t really need it to do it, then turn it off. In the end, this will save you a ton of battery. That means that you will be able to use your tablet longer between charges and you hopefully won’t have to worry about it dying right when you are in the middle of using it for work or play. No one likes a dead tablet battery, so optimize your tablet’s battery so it lasts you longer between charges and, in the end, will last you longer before it will need to be replaced.

Install and Setup Your Favorite Apps

Now we get to the fun part. Once you have the basics set and ready to go on your tablet, it is time to install all your favorite apps that you like to use. This list will differ for everyone, but there are a few basics you will want. They are:

  • Social Media Apps
  • Office Apps
  • Media Apps (Netflix, etc.)
  • Games
  • Email

These are just a few of the apps that you will want to install. If you have an Android tablet, I encourage you to download and install a File Manager as well. This will let you access the file system on your tablet so you can find the files you need while you work. Remember, the various app stores are filled with some great apps, if you aren’t sure what you need, take a few minutes to browse their lists and you should be able to find the perfect apps for you.

Once installed, make sure you revisit the optimize step we talked about above. These apps will need to be set for push notifications and background syncing just like everything else. That way your battery won’t be put under added stress just because you installed a few apps.

Parting Thoughts

There you have it. What we have listed today are things that every new tablet owner should do every time they buy a new tablet. When you buy an Android tablet, these items should definitely be on your list. I know you want to dive on in and start using and playing with your tablet, but you need to take a few minutes before you get started to do these things.

In the end, you will be glad you did. When you are finished, your tablet will run better and have everything on it that it needs, plus you will have all the accessories you need for your tablet to work well for you and you will have the safety and security that you need because you took the time to activate all the proper security features.
